What is BSPW?
It is an abbreviation for "Bicycle
Sponsorship Project & Workshop", a Non-Governmental
Organisation registered in Uganda, East Africa (map).
The idea is simple, very transparent
and very successful: As people in Uganda as elsewhere in Africa
have difficulties to afford the crucial and appropriate means
of transport called bicycle, we try to find donors abroad, who
can finance a bike. With 100
US$ donated you can finance a bike for a needy person in Uganda.
Well equipped with pictures about
the daily traffic in Uganda, some enthusiasts placed articles
in newspapers and magazines in Germany. The idea was picked by
donors and within few years, 2.000 bicycles could be given out
to people of grassroot-initiatives in rural Uganda. The fundraising
went well, budgets could be topped with money from development-aid
and within 16 years, the number
of bikes given out reached 30.000.
